Snow Day

This morning, after dropping Coach off at the airport so he could fly to Miami, the creatures and I bundled up and headed outside to play in the snow. We got a pretty good pile of it last night, and Sam has been begging to play outside for weeks. For a brief moment, I was glad that neither of my children are potty trained, cause I didn't want to have to peel all those layers off to race inside into the bathroom.
Speaking of layers, Sam got to try out the new coat and snow pants we bought on end-of-season clearance for next year. I guess it worked, because after more than an hour, he still didn't want to come in. Grace, on the other hand, was not nearly as enthusiastic about being outside.

Eventually, I took her inside to sleep in her own bed. She didn't care for the change of venue. I could still hear her screaming when I went back outside with Sam. But I'd promised we could make a snowman together.

Sam was pretty happy with the outcome. I was pleased with it too, but I will add that it was more complicated that I'd anticipated to accessorize a 10-inch snowman. I'd intentionally made the snowballs small to keep things quick and simple, (Apparently, my layers weren't as effective as Sam's, cause I was COLD!) but that meant finding a tiny carrot and minuscule bits of coal to keep it all to scale. A corn cob pipe was out of the question. Anyway, I think it all came together pretty well. I just hope I don't have to juice any lemons today.

Malcom had his own ideas for outdoor excitement. I don't know what he was up to, but he sure looked guilty, even before he asked, "What white lips?"
This is the view from our back porch.
I realize it's kinda white trash to leave discarded appliances sitting in the yard for months, but it went so well with the peeling paint on the neighbor's garage. And with a fluffy blanket of snow, the whole scene's downright picturesque. You know, in a trashy sort of way.

And finally, these are my attempts at artsy photos. I'm teaching the activity day girls some photography tips tonight. I'm ridiculously unqualified, but I figure they're only 8-11 years old. Maybe they won't notice.

As you can see, our snow day was a lot of fun. But I still think Coach might have gotten the better end of the deal. It's 80 degrees in Miami.

I really like the artistic beauty of the pacifier pic. what a fun snow day.

and no worries about the discarded appliances - only 1/2 the houses here in buffalo have them taken away, the other half keep them for lawn ornaments. :P

What a clever little hat!haha But what are you going to do when your neighbor accidentally steps on your tiny man?

Wow. That's a lotta snow.

I like your artsy pics and I think your girls will have fun with your photo tips! Will you be able to share some of their work?

I feel basically like Grace when it comes to snow. I remember Eliza's and Scott's first Iowa snowman. They used raisins for eyes, nose, and mouth. I felt bad for that poor snowman as I watched the birds eat his face off.

And can I just say that the propped up shovel next to the discarded dishwasher just gives that photo an added bit of something special.

Thanks for taking me back to the snowy Iowa days! Even though ya'll aren't in Iowa.

Hey Daisy -- no worries about the neighbors crushing Mr. Tiny. He's in the back yard, away from all the foot traffic. We might have trouble with Malcom though. That's why I didn't make the snow man's smile out of bacon.

Amber -- the pacifier is my favorite too. And I do take some comfort in not being alone in my back yard appliance collection.

Mrs. Donut -- Raisins! I hadn't even thought of that. It's probably just as well, though. I don't think Sam would react well to birds preying on his snowman.

What white lips? LOL! Remember when you gave me those cute sparkly lip glosses and Malcom got into the blue one? Awesome.
I like your little snow man. He's cute. Good idea on not using bacon for his mouth.

Looks fun. I like the snowman sombrero. Maybe Senor snowman is from Miami.

Malcom's lips (and his innocent question) are LOL funny! I was going to make the same comment about the snow shovel. It really does make the picture--including the irony--shouldn't that shovel have been used lately?--that it is still covered in snow.
